A Small Colony Mutant of Shigella Flexneri Var.X

Abstract
A strain of small colony mutant which had been induced by unknown reason was obtained from the stock cultures in this laboratory and the bacteriological studies were made.
The diameter of colonies of the mutant was one-third to four-fifths of those normal, and the number of viable bacteria in the colonies of the mutant was one-200th to one-90th of the normal form. The number of bacteria and the size of the colony were increased according to the prolonged time of incubation, and reached their maximums after 46 to 60 hours. It was also observed that no pH and temperature range was specially favoring the growth of the mutant.
This strain did not grow in the presence of any single amino acid in the Davis-Mingioli¢¥s synthetic media, but was able to propagate in the presence of some combinations of amino acids. The addition of amino acids to nutrient broth did not increase the growth rate of mutant.
